Image of Girl 'Sharpie' gang, St.Kilda West, 1975 – Limited edition of 100

In the 1970s 'Sharpies' were in, as was smoking – everyone smoked. Though they allowed me to photograph them, two of the girls in this group were not at all enthusiastic and two were, at best, ambivalent. However, I managed to get the shot before they realised how to say yes or no. All this made sense to me, as at the time the Sharpie sub-culture somewhat paradoxically condoned violence as well adhering to a strict moral code.

This photograph comes from the series 'St Kilda Photographs'. Over two years Crawley shot over 5,000 negatives, all of which were developed and printed in a homemade darkroom in St Kilda. This exhibition of photographs was exhibited at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1975.
